semi well-adjusted

Hi, Reader -

When we enjoy a family video blog or "vlog" on YouTube or watch a favorite TV show with a charming child actor, we are watching kids work. It gets complicated. We're also watching kids get famous before they can fully understand what that means. Over the years, laws have been created to protect young people in that situation. Here in Illinois, where I live, we have a new law to protect child influencers.

If your child wants to be famous, it is worth asking them more about what how they perceive the advantages--and checking (gently) to see if they understand some of the downsides.

I was so honored (and I'm still fangirling a little) to blurb veteran entertainer Alyson Stoner's memoir, Semi-Well-Adjusted: (Despite Literally Everything) out today. You may know Stoner from Camp Rock, Phineas and Ferb, or Cheaper By The Dozen.) Stoner is now an advocate for kids in the public eye--both on mainstream media and on apps like YouTube.

Back to School Pics? Get Consent.

While we think about the rights of child stars, we also need to remember that our non-famous kids are...a little more famous than we were (if we've been sharing them on our social media.)

I'm always a big proponent of getting kids' permission before we post them on social media. As you gear up for "back-to-school" please remember not to pressure kids do do those pictures. I know it can be hard to see other people posting if your kids are opting out, but the trust and relationship capital you are building is priceless.

Meanwhile, I've been hearing from educators and parents all over about cell-phone bans. If you have a new cell phone ban in your state or district, I can offer professional development, student workshops and parent talks to help your community make the adjustment in a mindful way. Let me know if you'd like to talk by hitting reply to this email.

Wishing you a low stress return to school,

Devorah

PS: I'm heading to NYC-area in both September and October, as well Cleveland, Miami and both NC and SC this fall. This is the time to reach out if you want to add on to one these trips (and save travel $$) or to propose a new destination or virtual talk.

Hi, Reader - I hope your summer is going well. Over here, I am trying to stay hopeful, but recent news about NPR and school funding have hit close to home. Our kids are hearing the news too, and we need to help them grapple with worries. This article about helping kids cope with what they are hearing about ICE raids offers concrete suggestions about a very tough topic. As always, I'm trying to balance my news consumption with activities that bring me joy and hope. We took a few hours this...

Hi, Reader - The transition to summer is a little hectic. My kid is doing lifeguard training. I'm learning how to be the parent of a teenager with a job. How much to help, how much to back off, etc. I admit that I'm pushing for independence while frequently nagging about sunscreen. Happy birthday, Growing Up in Public! Growing Up in Public is 1.99 today! This is your chance to read it with those friends in your bookclub or colleagues in your PLN! GET IT NOW! Want to talk it over with...

Hi, Reader - How are you holding up? The transition back from winter break is pretty rough for a lot of us (raising my hand.) My family all took turns getting sick over break. Vacations are supposed to be relaxing, but even when I manage to avoid scrolling through other people's vacations...my awareness spirals about how soon we'll be planning differently as our kid launches into the world. Meanwhile, he really needed some time off this break... and due to my slightly over-ambitious planning,...
